12/3 – 8:30am
The first thing you think of when you hear the word “Duck” is either a Mallard or the Aflac Duck, right? Did you know the Southeast is home to almost 20 species of ducks that come in all shapes & sizes? Unique ducks like Blue-winged Teal, Lesser Scaup, Northern Shovelers, and Ring-necked Ducks all make Phinizy Swamp their winter home to escape the frigid Northern waters during the winter months. Not to mention Bald Eagles are a common sight around the wetland in the winter time as these species of waterfowl are their preferred meals. We’ll also see unique birds like American Coots, Common Gallinule, King Rails, and Pied-billed Grebes out in the wetland cells of the park.
This adventure will be longer than our traditional birding trips taking us on a hike that could extend up to 2 miles or more. There is a very reliable pond on the property where the ducks tend to hang out & then we will walk around one of the cells of the wetland.
We’ll meet in the parking lot at 8:30am & return close to 12pm. Being wild animals, there are no guarantees we will find all of our target species, but we will do our very best to position ourselves where we will have our best chance of viewing them. This tour costs $50 per person. Note that guests who arrive late will be left behind and will not receive a refund or opportunity to reschedule. More details & meeting location will be emailed to you upon registration.
