10/16 – 1pm
Did you know Bison, the USA’s National Mammal, once roamed around South Carolina? They were quickly extirpated by Europeans, however thanks to Tatanka Bison Ranch, the Thunderbeast has returned to the Palmetto State! Join Capt. Zach and ranch owner Fred Ilse on a trip back in time as we head out into his pastures into the middle of Tatanka’s Bison herd and learn about the natural history of bison, what it takes to manage a herd of bison, and if we’re lucky we’ll experience the herd thunder across the pastures.
This adventure is a mix of ecotourism & agritourism as we encounter native wildlife, but since there are no wild prairie landscapes left in SC, there are members of this herd that are harvested and their products are sold by Fred which you can purchase at the end of the our tour.
We will meet outside the front gate to Tatanka Bison Ranch at 1pm. It is located in York, South Carolina, about a 1.5 hour drive from Lexington. I will be there to greet you upon arrival and check you in. Once we have all arrived, Fred will guide us to his pavilion on the ranch where we will start our adventure. After a safety briefing and introduction, we will pile into Fred’s Japanese Fire Truck and he will chauffer us around the ranch with brief stops to talk about the workings of the ranch.
Directions to meeting place will be emailed to you upon registration. $50 fee per person. You must register in advance online; space is limited, so please register early.
