We have to say goodbye

Take a Guess of the Age of our Pecan Tree

There’s always something blooming at Wingard’s!

pecan treeOur beloved pecan tree is dying

The large trees that shade our property are pecan trees.  They were planted many years ago by Delores’ grandparents.  The biggest one, located directly behind the Gift Shoppe, has been dying a slow death over the last few years.  Our tree expert advised us it is time to take it down before it takes one of us, or one of you, down with it.  So we will start our 50th year in business by saying goodbye to a symbol of our roots and our heritage.

We are not sure of the age of this tree, but we are planning to find out.  Jim Dicker, of Tree Care Services of Lexington, will count the rings and certify the age of the tree when it is cut down in early January.

We thought it would be fun to have a contest to guess how old the tree is.  For all those who guess the correct number of years, you will receive one pound of shelled pecans as a prize.

And the winners are:
  • Jennifer Miller
  • John Huffman
  • Leonard Vaughan
  • William Thomas Winfield

If you were a winner stop in at the Produce Market and pick up your 1 pound bag of pecans.
